How to Become a Faster Runner
One of the biggest lessons I can teach you is to simply, “never stop working on your speed.”
As you go about your running journey, you can only choose one thing at a time to focus on.
You can improve your speed or you can improve your endurance, but you can’t focus on both at the same time.
When you train for a half-marathon or marathon, you are primarily focusing on improving your endurance.
This is because these events primarily challenge your endurance and not your speed.
In fact, your speed stays relatively stagnant while marathon and half-marathon training.
But when you get faster over shorter distances like the 1-mile run, it becomes much easier to then cover longer distances at a quicker pace.
If you can run a faster all-out mile, then your next half-marathon or marathon will certainly be much faster too.
That’s why it’s essential for marathon and half-marathon runners to dedicate periods of time each year to getting faster.
Unfortunately most marathoners and half-marathoners have never really taken any time to focus on getting faster over shorter distances.
Instead, they keep training for marathon after marathon, never really challenge themselves to run faster over shorter distances, and ultimately see little improvement in their speed from race to race.
But the awesome thing is, because most marathon runners’ speed is so under-developed they can achieve huge improvements in speed and lower their 1-Mile PR significantly in as little as five weeks time.
In fact, the vast majority of athletes who follow my training set a new PR in the mile simply because they have never really focused on such a short distance before.
